Nate is making pasta for lunch. The water in the pot is boiling on the stove. The handle of the pot is sticking out over the edge of the stove, where someone could bump it.

Nate turns the handle in so no one can bump it. He puts on oven mitts before he picks up the hot pot. When the pasta is done, he turns off the stove.

Story 4A Box That Is Too Heavy


WATER

Tess works at the school store. A big box of water bottles comes in. Tess needs to move it to the back room, but the box is very heavy.

Tess bends her knees and keeps her back straight, but the box is still too heavy. She asks her coworker for help, and they put the box on a cart together. Then Tess pushes the cart to the back room.

Story 5Using a Box Cutter


Kim stocks shelves at a grocery store. She uses a box cutter to open boxes of cereal. The blade on the box cutter is very sharp.

Kim always cuts away from her body, not toward it. She keeps her other hand out of the way. When she is done, she slides the blade closed and puts the box cutter back in the drawer.

Story 6A Broken Cord


DO NOT USE

Ted has a job at the town library. He picks up the vacuum to clean the hallway. He sees that the cord is torn and he can see wires inside it.

Ted does not plug the vacuum in. He tells his supervisor right away. His supervisor puts a tag on the vacuum that says DO NOT USE and gives Ted a different one.
