Identifying the 5Ws

Identifying the 5Ws—who, what, when, where and why—can help you better understand what you read.
Read the story. As you do, think about the 5Ws.

Maya loved her grandma more than anyone in the world. Grandma’s birthday was coming up on Saturday, and Maya wanted to do something special. “I’m going to make her favorite breakfast,” she told her dad one evening. “Blueberry pancakes!” Her dad smiled. “She would love that. Let’s make sure we have everything we need.”

They looked through the kitchen together. They had flour and eggs, but the milk was almost empty, and there were no blueberries at all. “We’ll have to go to the store,” Maya said. So early on Saturday morning, Maya and her dad walked to the grocery store down the street.

Inside the store, Maya pushed the cart while her dad walked beside her. She found the milk in the cold section and picked out a fresh carton. Then she went looking for the blueberries. “Here they are!” she said, holding up a small box from the fruit shelf. At the checkout, Maya counted out her money and paid for everything all by herself.

Back home, Maya and her dad got straight to work in the kitchen. Maya measured the flour and cracked the eggs into a big bowl. She poured in the milk and stirred until the batter was smooth. Then she gently mixed in the blueberries, one handful at a time.

Her dad helped her cook the pancakes on the stove. Soon the whole kitchen smelled warm and sweet. Just then, Grandma came down the stairs, still in her slippers. “What is that wonderful smell?” she asked with a smile.

Maya carried over a big plate stacked with blueberry pancakes. “Happy birthday, Grandma!” she said. Grandma’s eyes lit up. “My favorite! Did you really make these all by yourself?” Maya nodded proudly. “I even bought the blueberries.”

They all sat down at the table to eat together. Grandma took a big bite and closed her eyes. “These are the best pancakes I have ever had,” she said. Maya felt proud and happy. Making her grandma’s birthday special was the best gift of all.
